while you're here, here's context for my comment on miles

[SPOILERS]while obviously his story is primarily about parental abandonment, i think it also makes a good allegory for grief. miles spends his whole life angry at his father for leaving him-much like the anger phase of grief. he copes with his anger through dry wit and a calloused exterior-but it also exists to shield him from his obvious grief. he has an aversion to meeting pierre or even confirming that he is indeed his father (denial). when he realizes that pierre did not abandon him willingly, he obviously takes that hard and feels immense guilt-another phase of grief. of course, he has to accept that this was his father's fate, and its role in his own fate. as someone who has experienced the loss of a parent, it's hard not to see myself in him to some extent, which is why he's one of my favorite characters.
