hal is a cynical, slow to trust, and somewhat abrasive elezen from sharlayan. misanthropic as they are, it took a long time for them to embrace their role as warrior of light. their arc as a character has them become more compassionate and understanding, growing to love the world and its people. they're a void scholar who wields an axe and void magic in battle.

hal was born in the sharlayan colony to ashildr ava, a hyuran sharlayan void scholar and sylvien vieleux, an elezen hunter from tailfeather. ashe, their mother, was smart, quick witted, and a control freak; sent to eorzea to survey the colony's voidsent activity. sylvien was a smart and skilled man fighting against the aforementioned local voidsent.
when hal was young, they planned a picnic for their parents as an anniversary gift. tragically, a voidsent ambushed them, ultimately killing sylvien. shortly after, the sharlayan colony was abandoned and hal and ashe moved to sharlayan.
hal’s mother was forever changed by this event and became less nurturing and more controlling. she ultimately blames hal for the accident on some psychological level, even though logically she knows it wasn't their fault. she becomes hellbent on revenge and grooms hal for a career in voidsent studies-essentially railroading them into this path. though hal would prefer to study the war of the magi, and showed a strong aptitude for both white and black magic, they eventually earned their archon mark for a thesis on void magic.
-hal is disabled. they have chronic pain from extended void exposure. where in real life they'd use a rollator, they instead magically summon a chair to sit on when they need to rest.
